Stuff I'm Doing Here

Wunmi and her drummers performing at Club Langston's in Brooklyn

For all you internet addicts, you all need to go to Korea.

While here in NYC I went to my usual haunts such as the Soulgasm party on Wednesday followed by Cielo to hear Kevin Hedge and Louie Vega. Friday was a party at Brooklyn's Langston Club with Rich Medina and an awesome live performance by singer/dancer/activist Wunmi. It was a nice surprise to run into Jamie 3:26 there (for some reason we always run into each other in this city), as he had just finished playing at a party in Jersey.

Saturday is of course the Shelter, my favorite House night ever! We stayed there from 5am till 2pm, and even ran into Wayne Williams by the DJ booth. The DJ of the night was the same as usual, annoying, playing with the EQ's till your ears wanted to explode and trainwrecking like there's no tomorrow. Since I was with two DJs going there for the first time, they could not believe how terrible he was and they were in awe at all the bad blends. I told them to just sit back and enjoy the experience, because that is what the Shelter is all about.

I've taken Vogueing, House and Gymnastics classes, bought tons of clothes and got to see good (and real) dancers at clubs again. None of that step-side-to-side-let's-just-grind-and-act-sexy dance moves everyone always does. I love it here!

NYC and boydom

I'm in New York for 2 glorious weeks!!! Yes! I'm staying in the same apartment I stayed in last year, a tiny 4th-floor walkup/workout on the East Village. I'm by a thousand vegetarian and Filipino restaurants, a mosque, 50 bodegas and tiny little everything stores. I'm so excited to be away from everyone, you have no idea.

Valentines Day was cute. I got some pretty underwear and a matching Tiffany's toggle necklace to go with the bracelet I got a few weeks ago. It's about time I started getting some gifts! This Mother-Teresa-no-presents-for-me-on-special-days style for the past 2 years was NOT working for me. Can you believe...Birthday, Christmas, nothing? 2 years? Boys today aren't made from the same cloth as their elderly counterparts.

Speaking of which, my man recently got my Fivestarboogie logo tattooed on his back shoulder and it looks great! Before that he had a tacky logo of his ex, which essentially looked like an open tampon, so thank God that shit is covered up.

Saturday

dancing for an AIDS benefit at the Park West

Tribute to Armando party at Betty's

Saturday was a very very long day for me. Being at the Park West Theater all day to do a dress rehearsal then do 2 two-hour shows back to back was really rough. This was a very big event with some of the top choreographers and performers in the city, with elaborate set pieces and costumes. There were 85 performers crammed into 2 tiny rooms and I believe some people had trailers. It felt like being in a slave ship, and I don't think I sat down once in the 12 hours I was there. The one good thing was that there were bars in the dressing rooms, with free liquor! The bad thing was I refused to drink, being that I had too much dancing to do and I couldn't afford to fuck up. Most everyone else was guzzling away like they were going to rehab the next day, and I couldn't help but shake my head at the irony of it all. I'm usually the one pasted to the bar.

The show was fantastic, and the Park West was packed for both performances. It was 1am and I wanted to go home and sleep, but I still had to go to the party on 75th for hosting duties. Before that I drop off magazines at Cuatro and Sonotheque then head south, bedraggled in old jeans, t-shirt and melted showgirl makeup. The music at 75th was awesome, and then I quickly stopped by 71st Street to wish Robert Williams a happy birthday. I am a walking corpse and my bed is calling me like a long lost lover. Zzzzzzzz

Come to These Events and Be Cool!

At Xippo doing the fake "I love reading 5 Magazine!" pose

Here are some events I'd like to plug:

* Liquid Vinyl is a movie that is playing for 2 more Saturdays at Facets Multimedia (1517 W. Fullerton) with 1pm and 11pm shows. This film focuses on the dance music world and the advent of the superstar DJ.

SATURDAY, FEB. 9TH

* There is an annual show called CHICAGO TAKES OFF that I am very proud to be dancing for. All the proceeds to go Test Positive Aware (TPA). There are two shows at 7pm and 9pm. I of course will be there from early afternoon on, so it would be a lovely surprise to see some familiar faces :) It's a very sexy show and for a good cause, so come show some love :)

* As there are a million and one parties that same Saturday night, I have the honor of hosting the party at 75th and Exchange, with DJs Gene Hunt, Craig Loftis, Antione Williams and Dave Maze. I hope I won't be completely dead, but hey! There is also Robert Williams' bday party at the 71st street spot, so show some love there too!

SUNDAY, FEB. 10TH

*If you haven't read the February issue of 5, please do so. The articles on Sunshine Jones and Armando (R.I.P.) are absolutely wonderful. There will be a tribute to Armando party at Betty's (1600 W. Grand), so come check that out.

Musings from a Newborn Domesticada

My love Luigi doing the same thing I've been doing all week instead of going out to useless clubs

Where before January 1st the thought of not going out was beyond painful to think about, now the idea of going out is excruciating to me. Unlike most new year's resolutions, my health ones have actually come to fruition. First of all, I finished my month long raw food detox (yey!) and am still continuing raw eating. I have stuck with my new routine of getting up early in the morning for ballet class, working on the magazine all through the afternoon, taking more classes/going to dance rehearsals at night, and best of all staying in in in! You know how people channel one addiction towards another? Well I think my new thing is cooking. Anything and everything. I'm on a very intense housewife alert, and there's an immense sense of power wielding a giant 10-inch knife in the kitchen. A housewife is not just a housewife...the chopping knife is her sword, emblematic of a modern day Medea, Helena of Troy, Cassandra, whoever. We symbolize men's fear of castration via the simple act of making a stew. Say something wrong and you'll be bff's with John Bobbitt.

And tv. Ah, glorious television! I didn't even know what that was up until recently. My thumb has lost a significant amount of weight with my ADD channel surfing style, and I am wallowing in the murk that all the entertainment gossip channels give us. I live for Britney and her 7-11 runs, she is the sole reason that people of all ages are ignoring important issues in our world today. Who cares about the war, poverty and societal ills...who did Bret Michaels kick out of "Rock of Love" this week? I love blondes with no self esteem!
