Shows, Rehearsals, Parties, Etc

Parish and Evan of Groove Junkies @ Sonotheque

Thursday I watch a New York dance group at the MCA that I heard so much about and was gravely disappointed. It was like watching an adult dance recital, and I couldn't believe this group received numerous grants and accolades just because they were addressing "African Dance."

Friday I check out the Groove Junkies at Sonoteque and am blown away. We interviewed this LA-based production/DJ duo a few months ago, and they played the most soulful and danceable House that kept that dancefloor packed! We then briefly stop by Zentra to hear Bear Who?, and unfortunately couldn't see Mr. V perform due to tons of canceled flights coming out of the east coast. Last stop is 5 Magazine and Nu Bang Clan's monthly party House Harmony at the Prophouse, and I always have fun in that up-on-the-top-DJ-box with Andre Hatchett and Craig Loftis.

With Sheryl and Andre Hatchett @ the Prophouse

Saturday we go to the Hothouse (where I've done all my major Fivestarboogie dance shows) to check out one of my biggest heroes: hip-hop actor/writer/activist/too much more to mention, etc. Danny Hoch from New York. It was his show "Jails, Hospitals and Hip-Hop" that inspired me to write my own play. So in 2001 I am one of a handful of writers handpicked to go to Cuba for a 2 week workshop , and I was put under Danny's wing to learn performance writing. It was right after that momentous trip that I finished writing my dance-play "Cinderella: A Hip-Hop Tale of an Illegal Alien", and starred/produced/choreographed for it. It had successful runs in a span of 1 year, and gave birth to my company Fivestarboogie Productions (to know more about my company's shows go to fivestarboogie.com). After that is a brief stop at Cuatro and Lego's party @ Darkroom, then home we go.

Sunday is a 5 hour dance rehearsal for my girl Jen GI's show, and I have never been so exhausted in my life. The WMC is almost here, and I have a MILLION things to do...

CeCe @ Boom Boom Room

CeCe Peniston singing @ Boom Boom Room

No one can ever get enough of classic House songs with a real female vocal. That's what gives it meaning. That's why Dajae can sing 50 times in this city at any and every gig and people go crazy. CeCe Peniston killed it last summer when she sang at Green Dolphin, and she wowed us once again this past Monday. (check out my interview with her in the archives.) I saw 5 of my dancer friends backstage because they were dancing with her, and they all worked it out with her. CeCe looked hot, and more than one man mentioned how mesmerizing her chest was.

Knees and Bellies

Steve "Silk" Hurley @ Zentra

Wednesday, I went down to record another edition of the 5 Magazine Radio Show for ChicagoHouseRadio.com -- click here to listen.

Friday night after a short rehearsal I check out some of my friends from Chicago Dance Crash at their concert at the Lakeshore Theater. Watching them flip around like that reminded me that I have to have to have to get my injured ass back in shape. I finally started physical therapy on my problematic knee, but I already feel myself slacking on all the damn leg clenching exercises I have to do. There's one exercise where I have to wrap a theraband around my ankles and squat down sumo wrestler style while walking side to side like a balletic gorilla. I cannot do these exercises around other people.

So aside from the usual places during the weekdays, I hear Steve Hurley and Jesse Saunders at Zentra Friday night, then later check out the 3 Degrees party at Smart Bar. It's been a long party week so Saturday night me and my boy stay in and stuff ourselves with Chinese food and lay out like bloated beach whales. I'm dying to check out Andre Hatchett at Ronda's party, but my belly is too distended from the msg.

Weekend Roundup

With FLX, random drunk guy, Staxx and Rawfood Chris @ Beviamos

After another long dance rehearsal Saturday, I hit up Morseland Cafe, Smart Bar, Cuatro, Sound Bar, Sonoteque and Ohm. Me and my friends chill at the Inner Sound System party at Sonoteque and had a fabulous time. My friend Buzz keeps falling in and out of love with so many different women, but none quite seem to make the grade. Always something not quite right. I try to explain to him my theory that I just go for the most defective ones, that way when something good happens you are pleasantly surprised. Later we go to Ohm and there was absolutely no one there. We then go to the Safehouse for a very scary afterhours set, where you just *knew* a fight was bound to break out. I had no idea where these freaks came from, and I thought I pretty much knew everyone in Chicago at this point. The doorman's price ranged anywhere from $20 to $5 a person, depending on how you came at him. After just 10 minutes we break out of there... I sensed a partymonster bloodbath riot about to happen.

Sunday me and my good friend Rawfood Chris look for something to get into, but find nada. So we hear Flx at Beviamos then go to hear reggae at The Note (scary.) Those are very strange people over there at that night: heavyset girls dancing by themselves, and drooling ogling men dancing towards them groin-first.

p.s. To psycho-stalker-exgirl: your mentiras are a little too obvious. Look miss thing, your pussy obviously wasn't fire enough, so let it go. Stick to the powder as your boyfriend, he'll never let you down (except when you run out.)

Only Twice

With friends @ Mix

Out of this whole week, I only went out TWICE. Wow. Can I get a round of applause? Just Sunday and Thursday. Speaking of Thursdays, the transplanted Four Nightclub promoters have split up: Divine Disco Unit doing Mix (really really nice place, awesome music, highly recommended)... and Obscure Ent. doing the downstairs of Rednofive (also beautiful and with great DJs)... all latin House so yey for us. (I LOATHE tech-House, electro, trance, progressive and euro!) We partied all night long, till the wee wee hours of the morning.

I'm holing up in the house more and more, plus dance rehearsals for the March show have been wearing me down. I am so happy to be with my family of dancers once again...they are my therapy and my escape from all the other stresses of daily, (or should I say night) life. Monday evening is the benefit for my girl Jen GI's dance company GI Alliance, where we'll all be performing for the company's 5 year anniversary. Later I hit up Green Dolphin to hear Stacy Kidd and meet 3 rolling boys from Detroit.
