Roy Davis, Jr. ft. XL :: "Reach"
Review by Terry Matthew | Published April 2008 | Review Archives
Chicago House producers and DJs Roy Davis Jr. and XL team up for this track on Jeff Craven's Large Music. Roy lays down a really steady beat with a simple but addictive little strum while XL riffs on the spoken word tip. There's a pretty funny line in here if you know about some of the old school vs. new school arguments that have taken place in this magazine's pages over the last three years, you'll love it when you hear it.
The Dub Mix funks up the beat and strips out most of the vocal except for the chorus. The Stripped Tek Mix and Dub are radical departures from the warm beat of the Get Large mixes, introducing a 303 and some atmospheric FX.
I've never been a huge fan of these types of anthems but Roy and XL absolutely nail it, making a song with a catchy chorus and vocals by XL and Roy's unrelenting pursuit of the perfect beat.
