Telepaticos: Carpe Sativa EP
Review by Terry Matthew | Published May 2008 | Review Archives
This is the first record I've ever reviewed from an Irish label, though the duo that put this together, Telepaticos, are actually Belgian... with a Spanish moniker. Got that straight? It's okay, you don't need to. Just listen: the title track, "Carpe Sativa", is the kind of sparse, jazzy track that plays with your head a bit more than your body. It has some cool atmospheric sounds straight from the assembly line.
"Club 69" (uh huh!) is actually my favorite track on here, with a funky bass and single-note string in the background that makes me think of big afros, flared cuffs and Jimmy Walker. It's a nifty, disco-influenced track with a wicked groove.
"I Know", like "Carpe Sativa", plays with some interesting effects (what sounds like a Moog doing call-and-response with a dirty horn sample). The whole EP from Telepaticos is a trip, a bit on the experimental side but worth the journey.
