Weekend Roundup

Lito dancing at Ohm |

Robbi the NY promoter, Brian of Unified Records and moi |

Stand up comedy show in the South Side |
Saturday I watch a small documentary on young Indian prostitutes called "Highway Courtesans". It was completely depressing, showing very poor village girls with no other option than to sell their bodies to dirty truck drivers in order to support their families. And the way their men treated them was absolutely appalling.
Later that night I go to Ohm once again, and my brother Lito is one of the hired dancers. I am so proud of him, he absolutely rocked it up on the boxes, and I haven't seen a single male gogo dancer in the city that can hold a candle to him. You go boy. One of the original promoters of New York's famous Shelter (Robbi) was visiting, and apparently he's been nominated 5 times as best promoter. Speaking of which, a girl told me that there was a poll on (yuck) MySpace for best Chicago female promoter, and I'm number one so far. I wonder if I "won"...
After the club we all go to Sista Stroke's bday party at the SafeHouse, and we stay there until probably 9am. As I stumble to my car I feel like one of Andy Warhol's afterdark posse...
Sunday Lito, his boyfriend and I go to a standup comedy club on the SouthSide called "Jokes and Notes." A lot of the comedians were from BET's Comic View, and the show was absolutely hilarious. Just what I needed, laughter truly is the best medicine :) Then later we all go to hear Gene Hunt and DJ Cease at Subterranean, and are entertained by a bunch of chunky "burlesque" girls literally taking off their clothes on the dancefloor. The (cute) bouncer had to run up there and gently usher them back into their seats so they could rethink their stage act. After that me and my boy Chris go to The Note, and I field calls from Lito telling me to take care of my neglected pussycat.

Clubs, Clubs and More Clubs

Andre Hatchett spinning @ the loft party |

at Zentra on Friday |
Saturday night jumps off at Lego's monthly party @ Darkroom. I love his parties, because all my good househead friends congregate to this night and it's such a wonderful feeling of family: Buzzito, Lito and his new boyfriend, Raw food Chris, Wanda, David Sabat, Louis, Aida and Claudia to name a few. After that we head to Adam's loft party on North Branch to hear Andre Hatchett spin. The party was the perfect size (not too crowded), and the place was actually clean! No gross raver kids drugging up the way a lot of loft parties are. My carry-on bottle of Tequila was getting quite a workout and I had a massive headache to show for it afterwards.
Sunday is the grimey Note to hear reggae... Tuesday we go to Xippo followed by Subterranean for hiphop. Yuck. Sausage fest. Then is desperation we follow some friends to Martini Ranch and that's where I wanted to just run for the hills. Chicago Scene Magazine photographers were taking our pictures, a gross rhythmless crowd of Paris Hilton types, and the most horrible music I have ever heard. It was a miserable and miscalculated night.
So by Wednesday I am sick as hell. Fever, runny nose and restlessness. Thursday and still deathly sick, I manage to make my way to K Lounge and a packed-to-death Four.
Friday I'm with friends at Ohm and hear Roy Davis Jr. at Zentra. An old boytoy has been calling me up lately, so I finally talk to him. It's amazing how time can erase all the bad qualities someone had and make them seem charming again. I invite him to join us, but somewhere along the night him and his friends got lost in a hiphop show and "something bad" happened. Hey, in a House club you don't got to worry about getting shot.

Crazy Thursday, Sad Friday

Roy Davis Jr., his brother, Bear Who and Lugo Rosado @ Tini Martini |

@ Four |
Thursday had mad events for me to cover: Peven Everett performing live at Betty's, then Bear Who's birthday party at Tini Martini, the opening of a residency at K Lounge, followed by Four. Later on a whole bunch of us went to this afterhours club that stays open 24 hours a day 7 days a week! With a full bar! As in, a really pretty club with leopard couches and tables and everything...it felt very speakeasy-like, and of course you have to know someone to get in. I was able to snag a membership card from one of the guys who runs it :)
Friday I stay in all day and don't move from my couch. My phone is blowing up with calls and text messages from friends asking where the heck I'm at. It's Paul Johnson's birthday party @ Zentra, but I just can't get myself to get up. Burned out. I've had my heart trampled on by stress, chemicals and a boy so I just veg out with my dog Luigi snoring on top of my legs. It's definitely sad day.

5 Magazine Radio Show Back on the Air!

David Sabat with Lloyd Dev warming up before the radio show |
After a two month "break", Wednesday is the return of the 5 Magazine Radio Show... yey! Doug Brandt is still on hiatus, so ChicagoHouseRadio.com's president Lloyd Dev has been kind enough to produce the show for now. I called ChicagoSoundSource.com's David Sabat to DJ and host the show with me that night. We had a blast taping the show, even though Mr. Sabat was being the uber-perfectionist about his mixing. I thought the show sounded great and am so glad it's back! Check it out this Saturday from 5 to 6pm or just click here to listen to it now!

Monday

Buzz wasted @ Betty's |
Monday morning I go to my friends Buzz and Lindsey's salon so they can work on my hair for class. They both wash and blowdry my hair (Buzz: wash and blow; Lindsey: wash and blow) while the owner looks on. Later at home I look for something to write about in next month's Luna Love article, and finally settle on "CUNNILINGUS: DOS AND DON'TS." I miss getting my cat ate. (Sigh)
In the evening Buzz comes over so we can watch some House dancing videos. After much analyzing and a few drinky drinks, we head out to the new House night at Bettys, followed by Green Dolphin. I had such a great time, Buzzito is really one of my best best friends, so nice and down to earth and FUN. We always said if we got married it would be the funniest and most stress-free marriage.
Later that night I go and hang out with a friend who is down and out, telling him everything will be okay. Mind you this is the person who wouldn't do the same for me, opting instead to lay down in bed and watch me mop up my bathroom. But I figure hey, I've got good karma coming right?

Weekend Roundup

Ojay and me at Ohm |
As my time clock still goes through various stages of setting and resetting, I've managed to a least get out to a few clubs here and there. I Love House Music Wednesdays celebrated their 1 year anniversary at The Note, and they had the place packed to capacity. Friday was Little Louie Vega at Zentra... I was only there for 5 minutes and I have never seen the club so crowded in my life. 'I hope there's no fire' I think to myself - talk about sardines freshly packed. Both were great parties. I heard some of my friends took Louie Vega to an afterset, which surprised me since he didn't strike me as the afterset/grimey type of guy. But I heard he was extremely cool and down-to-earth.
Saturday night I hit up Generator, Smart Bar, Tini Martini and finally Ohm. I am so exhausted and still have to take more pictures for the magazine deadline. But I love the upstairs of Ohm on a Saturday night!
Reality check: I wake up Sunday morning to a very flooded bathroom, and struggle to mop up what looks like a growing house pond. My house guest watches my (questionable) domestic struggles indifferently, not bothering to help or ask if I'm ok. He then asks me if I'm going to be grumpy all day because he doesn't want his day ruined by my stress. It is moments like these where I realize that I must be a closet masochist, because I should be hanging out with people who want to help me and who give a shit about me. Note to self: look at self in mirror 3x a day and say "I love me." or "I love you." We thrive on emotional S&M.
In the afternoon I go see this chick flick movie called Holiday, which was actually an excellent movie. It's about 2 girls who try to get away and forget their ex-assholes, so they exchange houses over the Christmas holidays. It was just the movie I needed to see. Of course the men they meet were a little too perfect, to the point of prince charming status, but hey. We can all dream and hope can't we?
Later that night I hit up the MLK parties at The Dating Game, Farley at Ohm and Betty's Blue Star. All were pretty quiet, because the nasty cold and rain dampened people's party moods. I didn't care I was out and about like a trooper, partying with my dancer friends all night.
Happy Martin Luther King day!

Same Old Same Old

me and my girl Claudia at Ohm |
Wednesday we go to The Note, Thursday is a brief stop at a very crowded and jumping Four, Friday I hit up 6 clubs with mags but stay in (asleep by midnight, miracle of miracles!), then Saturday is Sonoteque and Ohm. Monday morning I finally go to court for my "honking of horn" ticket (I hate u pigs), and the judge tells my to pay $40 and be done with it. I then take ballet class, work on the new issue all day and end up crashing from 3-11pm. My sleep schedule is all messed up. At midnight I stop by Green Dolphin to handle business, and the energy of the place made me so tempted to stay. But like a good girl I go home and stay up the rest of the night. I so wish I was back in the Philippines.

Recovery
It's been almost a week since I have returned from the blessed homeland, and I haven't written about my activities. That's because in my despair I threw myself into all sorts of mayhem that I shouldn't have, partying in the way I promised I wouldn't once I got back. I guess I had to get it out of my system and see if it still had the same effect on me. My body was not ready for it, and jetlag hit me HARD. The clubs and parties were fun over the holiday weekend, but miss thing suffered much physical and mental stress. (wacky overstaying-their-welcome hypes, sleep inconsistencies, proclamations of love from an unwanted-can't-get-the-hint-man and car damage to name a few fun things.)
All I can say is, thank God for friends. They really got me through... Andre Hatchett for always being protective, my dancer boys for looking out, and Lito for letting me talk his ear off about my problems.
Good News: My fivestar sister Boogie McLarin is having a child! (more blessings!)
Tuesday is professional ballet class, shady car estimates everywhere in the city, meetings and calls and emails. Geico is an awesome insurance company.
