Memorial Day Weekend

I am hurting I am hurting I am hurting!!!! Friday night against my better judgement I go to Charlie Matlock's mansion party to "stop by for an hour." Who was I trying to kid? I ended up staying there until 4am, and had to get up 3 hours later for my New York flight. Ouch. Saturday night is the Shelter, and there was a little bit of drama with me hiding from a multiple-personality compulsive-liar-dancer who decided I was to be his future wife. I was ducking behind poles and squatting by the speakers, occasionally peeking my head out to make sure he wouldn't see me. I did see Jamie 3:26, and it was a pleasant surprise to be dancing next to him.

Sunday night my dancer friend Jesus takes me to a very very scary club called Plum. Tribal house, all asians... ALL on serious drugs, just fucked up beyond belief. The bathroom attendant was a stiletto wearing S&M witch who would scream and spank people's asses at random. One girl was puking in the garbage can and no one blinked an eye. And there is nothing more unsettling than passing by a couch of passed out Chinese men in dark glasses.

Before I Go

Jamie, me, Elaine and her man for the night @ Visionz

Wednesday at the Note was the usual chaos, and I saw "Lambchop's" owner (see previous blog entry regarding a guy's pet alligator), who told me "I read the article you wrote." When I asked him which one, he said he had no idea. Gene hunt had a bandaid on his face, and that was because he apparently was laying out in the sun on an island too long and got bitten by a spider on his face and back.

Thursday I tape the 5 Magazine Radio Show with guest DJ Jamie London, Andre Hatchett's best friend. Afterwards we head out to hear Andre at Visionz, and I must say the bartenders there can honestly win the slowest anything contest. They look busy, but for some reason they're not really doing anything. Thankfully our good friend Zae always has her handy-dandy bottle of Patron in her purse, because no one was getting a drink up in that bitch.

Saturday I leave for New York. Yey! I'm actually going there to look into a possible 5 Mag expansion. I'll be meeting with the West End folks who do the magazine "Listen" and see if we can collaborate somehow. I have to cram as much work as I can in that 1 small week I am there, but I don't mind. In NY it is just me me me alone... no pesky people jabbering in my ear, no boys, no friends, no NOTHING. New York is my Zen Garden of peace.

The Tuesday Night Social Club

So strictly by chance and accident, last week myself and Rawfood Chris went out on a Tuesday. I *never* go out on a Tuesday. But we were sad and bored so we went to People, and ended up finding a few Househead friends on the same tip. We then headed over to the Note and had an absolute blast. The music was old school hiphop and r&b, no longer that nasty open mic primitive shit that it once was with the post Tuesday Subt crowd. It was very mellow and peaceful even though we were not. So we have now christened our group the Tuesday Night Social Club, and took it upon ourselves to do it again last night. As of now there are about 6 of us to start, and that grows into quite a bit more once the 3 o'clock hour hits.

Weekend Roundup

me and Kenny Dope

Friday evening we have our dance performance down by Roosevelt and California and it was a huge success. Afterwards I see Andre Hatchett spin at an afterwork set at some bougie restaurant called Solo. The volume was so low I swore I was going deaf. Then I'm off to hear Terry Hunter and Kenny Dope Gonzalez at Zentra. The music was great and I hate men. After close a group of us (Terry, Kenny, Leonard Part Sixx, and some other folks I didn't quite know) have breakfast at Mitchell's. Everyone was so rowdy and drunk, and Terry kept insisting that he have an "egg-white" omelette (for dietary purposes), but wanted there to be lots of cheese on it. I had a diet coke (for dietary purposes) to go with my big plate of fried everything.

Saturday night me and Raw Food Chris go to Lego's monthly party at Darkroom. Super packed, great set, but shut down early because of a fight. Then (against my will) went to Ohm, and I could feel myself fading. Sunday we hear DJ Cease and Gene Hunt at Subt and love it. As they were kicking people out they put on a porno on the big screen, and there was no way in hell any of the staff was leaving. I believe the name of the movie was "White Girls' Asses." I'm so serious.

Green Card

I FINALLY FINALLY GOT MY PERMANENT GREEN CARD!!!! After years and years and YEARS of waiting to be a permanent resident, I now am!!!! Now I can marry for LOVE!!!

Wednesday I saw an amazing show at the Cultural Center downtown: a human beatboxer, 2 bboy crews, a vogueing piece and a capoeira group. I knew everyone in the show, and was very impressed by their performances. It was a beautiful thing to see all of them display such amazing talent. Speaking of shows, I have another one this Friday at the Chicago Park District for my girl Elaine's center. This time is an Argentinian piece with all of us women being former dancers for the Joel Hall Dance Company. It's going to be hot :)

Went to the Note and had a great time with my girls. We all had the same point: what happened to plain old chivalry?? Why are WE always paying for the drinks? What "man" has actually asked us out to dinner? I mean, what the fuck? You pigs meet us at a club and expect US to buy you guys a drink? (Not you Alphonsie you always hook it up.) We gals have our tabs open like a whore's legs and not one of you all think to either reciprocate or offer first. Man up. Get a job and realize it's YOU who are supposed to buy us a drink, not leech off of us like it's the Discovery Channel. Jesus.

Geographic Choices

with my girl Elaine @ Visionz

For the first time ever I checked out the southside establishment called Visionz, where Andre Hatchett has a Thursday night residency. It's very cute, almost like a Celebrity but better. I met one of my dance divas Elaine and had a blast, away from all the northside heads. One big girl was trying to push up on her man and I wanted to snap at the heffer, but Elaine is on some "leave her alone she needs that attention" peaceful type shit.

* For those who don't know: Ohm is under new management, so DJs and lineups are a little uncertain at this point. No more Music 101 staff there (and that includes all the DJs.)

Friday we dance at the Looptopia event, and the whole downtown Chicago was packed with concerts, art demonstrations, plays, comedy sketches and bands. It was incredibly festive. I unfortunately couldn't stay, having to do my little club run-around-magazine-dropoff thingy.

Saturday I watch a dance workshop performance at the Athenaeum theater, and there is nothing more touching than seeing so many family and friends come support their loved ones...every other person in the audience had a bouquet of flowers in their hands, waiting to be given at the end of the show. I was tempted to snatch the roses on the seat next to me and pretend that they were mine. (sigh..)

Later me and Terry stop by Cuatro to support Vick Lavender's record release party and see his newly formed House music band. We then go to the monthly get-together at KStarke Records on Western and Division. Leonard Part Sixx was playing and a nice group of people were there to listen to and buy records while Kevin (the owner) and his wife played awesome hosts. Vinyl junkies... you must check this place out... it is a treasure trove.

I then hustle over to an (unpromoted) party on 41st and State for Ron Carroll and Craig Loftis. There are 5 people there, but I just chill and talk to Craig and (a very drunk and chatty) Linda Redd. I would rather be in a dead southside party then a sardine-packed-talk-your-ear-off-I-think-I-know-House-let-me-get-a-bump northside crowd any day.

This whole coming week I'm going to play domestic goddess and stay in, work, watch some tv, and cook (stop laughing, I know how to make some things.) I will be my own housewife.

Boytoy Callback

I have been asked to audition for a well known theater company's east Indian version of a Shakespearian play. For most of you who don't know, I was an actress all my life up until I got back into dancing and of course... House music. The script is amazing, the theater is fabulous and the parts offered are ones I'd die for, but I've been so out of practice I don't even have any audition monologues prepared.

On the love front... I don't know if it's because it's springtime or what. But all the old boytoys (as in from YEARS ago...) have been coming out of the woodwork blowing my shit up. The useless waiter, the record mogul, the exotic dancer, the sketchy southside bboy to name a few... They are hunting. I'm talking 'bout the doggie dogs sniffing around. Except for maybe one, the rest I couldn't give 2 cents about. So please, go piss on another hydrant, mine is still in recovery.

There is this HUGE once-a-month 24-hour cultural event/dance party downtown called Looptopia, and the next one is this Friday. I'll be dancing for my girl's company (GI Alliance) in an informal setup at the Fine Arts Building, so if anyone wants to see me in a pretty black dress dance to a Patsy Cline medley with 3 other girls, be there around 10:15pm Friday.

Weekend Roundup

Ronda's bday party

Thursday I have dance rehearsals for an upcoming show for Douglas Park and spend the whole night finishing up writing my own dance show and mixing music. Staying in is lovely.

Friday evening I go to this monthly event at Unity Church called 818... it's supposed to be this spiritual type fair with meditation, drumming circles, tarot cards, massage, a "dj" singers, etc. I knew it was going to be slightly hippyish, but I was certainly not ready to experience the Grateful Dead-style dancefloor complete with a dancing Ganesh (that's the elephant Indian God), white women in saris and whirling dervishes. It was a little unsettling, and although there was no alcohol, no one could convince me that there wasn't some kind of hallucinogen involved with these guys. I got my arm hennaed up by a real Indian girl, then scurried off.

Later that night I stop by Zentra for Roy Davis Jr. and Marques Wyatt, and immediately remember why I stopped going to my beloved Zentra: because everyone talks my ear off! I hear that people not associated with us have been using the 5 Magazine name to get into clubs, and I tell those bouncers never to allow that again. I then go to the final NuBang Clan/5 Mag monthly party at the Prophouse and begin to enjoy myself. I like being around people with rhythm.

Saturday I go to promoter Ronda Flowers' bday party at Room 43 on the southside. What a gorgeous gorgeous space: 2 floors (people were watching the fight on a movie screen upstairs), huge and very clean. Now that was a REAL party!

Sunday morning I missed getting up to see His Holiness the Dalai Lama. So did other people. Woops.

Radio Show with Andre

me and Andre Hatchett taping the 5 Magazine radio show

After playing it homebody-style for 2 days handling work and dance stuff, Wednesday I take Andre Hatchett out to do a late-birthday celebration for him. I tape the 5 Magazine radio show with him as my special guest, then we head out early to the Dating Game to hear David Sabat spin while we just chill and drink. David played a great set, and a lot of his music reminds me of New York's Club Shelter. It's been so long since I've hung out with Andre, I've really missed him.

Later I head to the Note to drop off magazines, even though I wanted to turn in early. I meet this very drunk guy who kept offering me $500 if I just took care of his pet alligator "Lambchop" for 1 month. I explained to him that I had many many pets in my house that Lambchop would probably eat, but he kept staggering his whiskey breath by my lovely face and insisting "I'll give you $500 NOW."

Later a well-known DJ grabs me and insists that "we can't deny our love anymore" and that "I must feel what he feels." Wha? Hah? I see his pupils rotating in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions (each eyeball), so I gently try to extricate myself from his vice grip. He will not let me go. Apparently our love is too strong, and that "WHO CARES if the world is fighting us??! They can't deny OUR FEELINGS!!"

"I GOTTA GO THEY'RE TOWING MY CAR!!!" I yell, and bolt out New-York-subway-mugger-style before my eyeballs started spinning in circles too. I do not miss Chicago.

Sun and Flowers

Everyone and their mama was out that warm Sunday, and I was no exception. I meet up with my friends Chris and Frances on the Fullerton beach and we hang out, talk and watch this guy with a HUGE MEGA GUT wearing tight spandex bike shorts talk on his cell phone. Later that day my usually grumpy business partner gives me flowers! Awww... he must have sensed my recent depression. I LOVE flowers :)
