The Chicago Marathon

me and my brother Scotty at the end of the Chicago Marathon 2007 |
My doctor brother Scotty came into town on Friday afternoon so he could once again run the Chicago Marathon. That night we had dinner at Maggiano's followed by watching the premier screening of a documentary on marathoners. Sunday morning, armed with 2 signs we made the night before, me and my boy proceeded to follow Scotty around the city to cheer him on the grueling 26.2 mile course. It was deathly hot, and by the time we were in Chinatown at mile 20, I was about to pass out. And that's when we later find out that the marathon officials canceled the race. The runners were forced to walk the rest of the race, and no one was given a running time, which was the reason most of the 45,000 runners signed up in the first place. Scotty told me that the first 3 water stations completely ran out of water and gatorade. How ridiculous is that? People were passing out like flies, and one man sadly passed away. The race officials were all over the news later vehemently denying that they were lacking in water and medical supplies, but their fuck up was so glaringly obvious. A marathon is stopped half way because they didn't have enough water.
So now I have my brother's finish medal hanging on my doorway. He said he feels it wasn't deserved, since he couldn't really "run" the whole damn thing.
