Weekend Roundup

Madd Soul musicians @ Zocalo

Linda Redd singing ALL NIGHT LONG

What a fun, fun weekend. Friday night we have dinner at the upscale Zocalo while listening to the musicians of Madd Soul (Lego, Louie Louie, Tommy Bradshaw and I forget the trumpeter's name...). The food was absolutely delicious, and we got to sample flights of crazy flavoured tequila. Afterwards we stop in to hear Jellybean Benitez play at the 3degrees anniversary party @ Sonotheque. We then go to the southside to party for Linda Redd's karaoke birthday party. I've never seen anyone so possessive of a microphone that she carried it all around the house with her, even inside the bathroom. Andre Hatchett and Willie Wills spun, and we had the best time ever. THEN, we go to a southside AFTERHOURS... which was the craziest one I've been to in my life. We were partying with old OLD men, as in men in their 60s and 70s, and there were Pacman and Space Invader video machines all around the place. One old guy was walking around selling bootleg dvds, but everytime he'd wheedle you to buy a movie, he'd proceed to tell you the whole story so you didn't need to buy the dvd.

After staying at the crazy southside afterhours until 12 noon, I go straight to my doctor's appointment. My eyes are spinning and my pores are reeking of alcohol, but somehow I manage not to faint when they take my blood. The nurse gave me a little blowup bus to squeeze on during the needle part, and I pretty much deflated the damn thing.

Sunday afternoon we watch the Midnite Circus performers at the Daley Plaza with 500 other screaming children, then party south at Celebrity and the Dating Game. We finish off at Betty's, and I am completely unimpressed by the halloween costumes. I usually dress up for halloween, a different costume every night of the holiday week, but I am cranky and burnt out. Monday day I buy a super expensive gown for my upcoming awards ceremony, carve pumpkins with my boyfriend while watching Sex and the City, and start an insanely complicated 500 piece puzzle I bought from the dollar store 5 years ago. I have been working nonstop, but what you are hearing is the narrative of all my procrastinating activities. Tuesday we rent a tux and buy shoes for my man, make more fliers for the November release party, make endless calls and emails and cook.

Both my brothers are flying in this weekend for my awards ceremony and I am very excited :)

Crazy Hours

My sleep schedule is all fucked up. It started out about 2 months ago when in my post-BADDEST BITCH show party mode, I would stay up into the late hours of the next morning/early afternoon, go to bed, then wake up first at 6pm, then 7pm, then later, eventually waking up at midnight. Then my "day" would start. This went on for a while, though mind you I was still getting lots of work done (nothing like being your own boss kids!).

But now the tides have changed... now I wake up late (10pm), and basically pull an all-nighter. I stay up all through the night, into the morning and afternoon, and crash out by 7pm. Then I wake up at 3am and start my day. Why can't businesses be open by 4am??? I feel like a fisherman/starbucks employee/old lady with crazy rising hours. I am a walking jet lag model.

sidenote: This super chunkoe homely girl tried to tell me an ex of mine used to check her out and really wanted her. Now being the nice girl that I am, I refrained from laughing right at her face. Why are people so delusional? I might see a guy and think he looks stupid and retarded, and as my luck would have it he'll probably think I find him hot. If all your breastesess are hanging out your dress, if you've got a fucked up haircut, if your face looks a little crooked, trust me guys... people will stare. I've had guys come up to me and tell me they want me to have their children, but in my humility (yes I do have that), I still won't assume they want me! Hello.

Radio Show and Last Minute Speech

Lloyd Dev and Rees taping the 5 Mag Radio show

Tuesday Night Social Club

Wednesday night me and my man Rees tape the 5 Magazine radio show for ChicagoHouseRadio.com, which I've been slacking on for a long time. We tape at Lloyd Dev's, then head on over to the Dating Game for early night festivities. Friday night we have an awesome time at Brett and Nicky of D'Vine One Enterprises' 1 year anniversary party at Leo's Den, then head on over to Zentra to hear the always fabulous DJ Spinna. Saturday night I spend running around from party to party dropping off magazines at Lego's thing @ Darkroom, Africa Hi-Fi @ Sonoteque, and Ronda's party @ Room 43. I'm tired and stressing because I have to write my acceptance speech for an upcoming awards ceremony. They are videotaping me do it the next day and I'm not prepared. We end the night at Smart Bar and I am beyond bored. (Good thing: I got a card and flowers for Sweetest Day! Finally!)

I will be receiving an Outstanding Filipino Achievement Award in the Performing Arts on Nov. 3rd by the Filipino community here. I am very excited and honored. So Sunday afternoon all the awardees had their 1 minute speeches videotaped so they can be played on these giant screens the day of the awards ceremony. I got all dressed and made up, stared at my last minute speech till I went blind, and did my best impression of forever glamour in front of the camera.

October Issue Release Party

October issue release party on the southside

Monday: Green Dolphin, Tuesday: Lava Lounge and The Note, Wednesday: The Dating Game and The Note, Thursday: Visionz, Bravo, Stooges (don't ask), Bungalow and Smart Bar, Friday: Zentra and last and definitely not least... the October issue release party. My buddies Angie and Face both hosted this awesome party at a humongous virgin loft space, and the DJ sets were broadcast live on Chicagohouseradio.com. Endless nonsensical "Hey do you remember me?" conversations aside, we all had a blast. We then ended the night at the Prophouse, and DJ Stoney was kind enough to switch the format from hip-hop to House for us :)

Saturday we hit up Dave Maze's party at the Red-I, then go to this awesome afterset house party waaay on the southside (105th) called Da Basement. You literally go down the basement and have a banging party complete with a full bar, and an awesome bartender who didn't really know how to make drinks but willing to make you very drunk. Sunday is Subterranean and Betty's and more afterhour delights. Monday I pull an all-nighter like a good girl to finish my magazine work, then get up and go to traffic court because pigs have to eat.

The Chicago Marathon

me and my brother Scotty at the end of the Chicago Marathon 2007

My doctor brother Scotty came into town on Friday afternoon so he could once again run the Chicago Marathon. That night we had dinner at Maggiano's followed by watching the premier screening of a documentary on marathoners. Sunday morning, armed with 2 signs we made the night before, me and my boy proceeded to follow Scotty around the city to cheer him on the grueling 26.2 mile course. It was deathly hot, and by the time we were in Chinatown at mile 20, I was about to pass out. And that's when we later find out that the marathon officials canceled the race. The runners were forced to walk the rest of the race, and no one was given a running time, which was the reason most of the 45,000 runners signed up in the first place. Scotty told me that the first 3 water stations completely ran out of water and gatorade. How ridiculous is that? People were passing out like flies, and one man sadly passed away. The race officials were all over the news later vehemently denying that they were lacking in water and medical supplies, but their fuck up was so glaringly obvious. A marathon is stopped half way because they didn't have enough water.

So now I have my brother's finish medal hanging on my doorway. He said he feels it wasn't deserved, since he couldn't really "run" the whole damn thing.
