Do you believe in synchronicity? Back in May 2009, Dimitri from Paris (myspace, discogs, twitter) made an edit of The Jackson 5 classic (and probably their most famous song after "ABC") "I Want You Back". It was, in his words, "for my sets and to give [to] a few DJ friends." Michael Jackson was still alive then, there was no motivation do do this other than for his own (and his dancefloor's) pleasure.
After Michael Jackson passed away, Universal orchestrated hasty plans to issue a multi-volume set of Michael Jackson remixes collectively titled Michael Jackson: The Remix Suite. The first one hit as a digital download on August 25th, with each new volume following two weeks later (The Remix Suite I is being reissued this month on physical media - you can preorder it from Amazon here).
As it turns out, Frankie Knuckles' remix of "Forever Came Today" is also included in the package. Frankie heard Dimitri's track, passed it on to Motown, and in short order - we're talking about a matter of weeks, if not days here - "I Want You Back" was included on Volume II the remix suite. All of this came, mind you, from a track Dimitri made for the love. (And for the last bit of synchronicity, our June 2009 issue included two interviews: one with Dimitri from Paris, and one with Frankie Knuckles).
Dimitri from Paris will be making his next visit to Chicago this October 24, 2009 as a special guest at Deluxe Saturdays at Griffin Lounge.
