Note: The 5 Magazine DJ Series was a monthly CD series released in a limited edition around the Chicago area, from March 2007 to November 2008, superseded by New Mix Monday. We featured mixes from legends such as Frankie Knuckles, Gene Hunt and Terry Hunter to the next generation of hard-working Chicago House Music heroes. While the CDs are no longer available, the mixes still are! Enjoy!
As the cover story in the first ever issue of 5 Magazine in August 2005, we think of Rafael "Légo" Rodriguez as a part of our family. He's spun at both of our anniversary parties and has always been helpful as we moved forward.
As it's been awhile, we wanted to check in on what he's been up to, and he graciously agreed to mix this month's edition of the 5 Magazine DJ Series, available free in limited CDs on the streets of Chicago and on our website at 5chicago.com/djseries.
In addition to his legendary residencies in the Chicago area and international touring schedule, Légo also spins at his monthly White Label Sessions party at Darkroom (3rd Saturdays, 2210 W Chicago, 9pm-3am). On the production side, his label Poontin Muzik's Fall '07 Sampler Pt. 1 is scorching up the charts on traxsource.com. He's also just released his remixes of Ralphi Rosario's "Take Me Up (Gotta Get Up)" ft. Donna Blakely and "Wanna Give It Up" ft. disco goddess Linda Clifford.
We asked Légo about how he likes to move a room from behind the decks.
"First, I like to read a room - just check out the crowd and the vibe. Then I take the approach of how I'm going to bring the music to them." As far as breaking new music, "It's the set up. You have to set up a song. If it's that hot, I'll play it again.
"On a mix like this one, I try to create a feeling throughout - a journey into sound." You can find out more about Légo's latest creations at myspace.com/poontinmuzik and myspace.com/lego24.
