5 Magazine Announces The Armando Project
by Terry Matthew | Published August 2007 | Features Archives
Back in the January 2007 issue, Ron Trent remarked that the number of people who today claim to have been at Ron Hardy's funeral would number in the hundreds, though he remembered four DJs who actually made it - Terry Hunter, John, Ron Trent, and Armando Gallop.
A few years later, Armando himself - promoter, DJ, and one of the most talented producers I've ever heard - passed away. His friends remember him - they've mentioned him often. Tracks like "Land of Confusion" stand immortal, and they always will. But it seems that we, as a culture, are in the act of forgetting - not the artist, but one of the remarkable people who made House Music into what it is, or what it should be.
This December will mark 11 years since Armando passed away, and we'd like to create a tribute in our own way. If you knew Armando, worked with him or in any way remember him, even as a dancer or a fan (especially as a dancer or a fan) - we'd like to talk to you. If you have photos or video - would you let us see them? At a minimum, this will turn into a special feature on one of the absolute giants of Chicago. In reality, it can turn into whatever you want it to be. We don't have to lead it, but someone needed to step forward to get this underway. If you'd like to help, mail us at terry@5chicago.com.
