It's been almost a year since Miguel Migs (website, facebook, myspace, discogs, last.fm, iTunes, wikipedia) played at a 5 Magazine release party here in Chicago while gracing the cover of our December 2008 issue. Recently he played at Griffin Lounge and I got a chance to catch up with him briefly about his upcoming projects, including his newly released mix CD Get Salted Volume 2.
The way I approach a mix CD is a little bit more on the side of being oriented for listening pleasure. I was trying to go for something that was easily enjoyable when you're chilling at home, at a little House party or while you're just cruising in your car. Something digestible, rather than trying to make it some peak-time club experience, which is not really what I do anyways. It's soulful, electronic and dubby. I also try to include a few unreleased tracks to keep it interesting - to try to make sure I'm putting stuff on there that might not be so obvious. So aside from the nonstop touring, what else has been going on with you lately? I'm actually working on a new artist album. So I'm spending the rest of this year fine-tuning, writing and recording so that I can release it next summer.
Do you have a favorite song on the current mix?
I don't have a favorite but one track that pops into my mind is the one with Lisa Shaw, a track called "Like I Want To," which is from the European cats Dutchican Soul.
Oh yeah. We're about to release a full EP from them. I've been playing their track for over a year now... No matter if it's a huge festival with 10,000 people or a small bar with just a few hundred people, it always does nice.
No, I've had to really put that on hold because it's so hard to do everything! I really do want to push a live project in the future but I want to give it my full attention and let it be the best it can be, rather than it being a small, part-time project. With a live show, everything has to be spot-on perfect.
I couldn't even tell you one person on that list ever because I've never even looked at it! I've never tried to promote myself for that purpose, it's not really my interest! To me it's a very bizarre concept.
Yeah it was really bad and I had to cancel a bunch of bookings from February through April. I had a lower back problem involving injured disks. I guess it's from me being so tall and skinny and years of DJing it finally caught up with me! Now I have to be very careful and particular about the DJ setup wherever I play and make sure the height of the tables is just right.

I was listening to your CD and I think it's a perfect mix to listen to while taking a long drive.

It seems that Dutchican Soul is really blowing up!

So has your live band Petalpusher been put on the backburner indefinitely?

Have you been like all these other DJs hustling to make DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs list?

I heard you recently had a back injury.
