E-Man :: "Not for You"
Review by Sean Smith | Published February 2007 | Review Archives
When looking for tracks in the musical jungle where there are so many imitators, this track stands out. This is the first single from Chicagoan Doc Link's Liberate Records. The thing that attracted me to this track is its attitude. The lyric starts out with the words, "Well if you were waiting for a love song well this ain't it. /With sunshine roses and happy s**t./You could wait for that s**t until your face turns blue/cause this track is not for you". This is a bold statement no doubt that you will never hear on the radio but for the underground that is okay. E-Man delivers his message well and uses many colorful metaphors during the way.
For a NY producer this track reminds me of Cajmere's dub tracks on his label Cajual back in the '90s. In addition to the original and a dub mix, there is also a mix by Doc Link that takes the track a lil' deeper with some tech House elements but never loses the underground feel at all. This is the mix I like the best. The groove is worked well with vocal bits and builds nicely before the main vocals are laid out. To me this is something different and a welcome change. Sometimes it is good to get away from all that happy s**t!!
