Funky Transport vs. Jonee Q. :: "Shake It"
Review by Chain | Published August 2007 | Review Archives
Gene Farris' Farris Wheel imprint is receiving a lot of attention, with the release of A Decade of Beats Vol. 1 with remixes by JT Donaldson and Demarkus Lewis and now this one. I'm always unclear about these "versus" records; I always have the sneaky suspicion that it could just as easily be one producer rescuing a broken track as an actual collaboration. No worries here, though: Funky Transport bring it hard with an underground sound featuring pure, unadulterated, filthy beats. The vocal by Jonee Q. was superb; almost psychedelic in places, but most of the song is that way. Derrick Carter handles remix duties and picks it up a notch or two with a machine gun Chicago jack. I'm not sure what to make of this, really - the sounds shouldn't work together, but they do. And like Duke Ellington said: "If it sounds good, it is good."
