Nearly a month went by between Fresh Meat promos and I began to worry if something was wrong. They're just that consistent with their releases, and Mazi and Nathan have really hit their stride in 2010 with releases that have managed to win over both the dancers and the beat aficionados you couldn't imagine dancing if their hair was on fire (no mean feat, that). They continue what has to be considered visionary A&R with this release from Hans Thalau, about whose previous work I could have told you almost nothing. "Me" is a deep tech masterpiece - right when you're about to think "minimal," it cuts you down to the bone with a groove that completely takes over. The Matthias Vogt remix has that rumbling percussion that I associate with some of the early Prescription cuts. "And I" (clever, innit?) is groovier from the start, more uptempo and the percussion on both the original and the remix by Nathan Drew Larsen really shine. I don't really want to be accused of overselling this, but there's a kind of low-key genius to what these guys are doing and this EP is a sterling example of it. In an era when Ableton has allowed even the tone-deaf to make the claim of being point-and-click producers, there's a virtuosity here that you just can't get from pre-digested loops.
