Larry Heard Pres. Mr. White :: "The Sun Can't Compare/You Rock Me"
Review by Chris Hafner | Published January 2008 | Review Archives
Is it me, or is the turnaround time between when the hot jocks get records and the rest can pick up a copy at the shop getting longer and longer in the digital era? I remember hearing this track in 2006, but it was nowhere to be found. A new pressing by popular demand brings this back and makes it relevant again and hopefully more will get a chance to buy the vinyl this time around. There's some terrific, emotional while understated musicianship here - while the vocal is rather subdued, Larry Heard makes the 303 sing. If you can't imagine a melodic acid track, then you really need to pick this up to hear what it can do in the hands of a master.
On "You Rock Me," Mr. Heard shows his affinity for R&B and soul. The downtempo beats give Mr. White (aka Chad White of Memphis) a chance to really shine.
