Leela James :: "Good Time"
Review by Terry Matthew | Published January 2007 | Review Archives
The Craig C Vocal Mix of Leela James' new single from West End is getting a lot of play. It's got a really strong Old School/deep disco sound to it - you can almost visualize Leela stepping out and doing this as a duet with Loleata Halloway. Craig C's mix is full-fledged soul diva worship, bringing James' powerful voice to the forefront. The Eddie Amador mix has a more jackin' sound, but while it might sound good on my iPod, there's all kind of ambient crowd sounds (not cheers, just people sounding like they're in a club talking) mixed into the background which could be really weird on a big soundsystem. It kind of lacks the overall energy of the other two mixes, which brings us to the surprise for me at least: the Groove Junkies mix. The duo from MoreHouse, fresh off their "reinvention" of Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle's "Because of Your Love", gets this thing going with a more easy-going West Coast vibe. The vocal is back up in front (and with a vocalist this good on board, it's a crime not to). This is a fun track that's going to be getting a lot of mileage over the coming months.
