Aaron Dae has been telling me to check out Sebastian Doering's Lovebirds. After a few days of sampling the back catalog and this latest release on Jimpster's Freerange Records, I can see what he's going on about. "Alright" has that super-fat bass that sounded so awesome on radio hotmixes in the '90s, knocked down beneath hand claps and a jackin' beat. The vocal samples haven't been done like this since David Morales. Other people can play with melodies like this - they can imitate, they can fake it, but this is the real deal. "Alright" is the hit of the record - it might be last in the track listing but it's what really got my attention. The title track plays around with some time-stretched synths to great effect - again, this is a classic sound without consciously thinking about it - while KiNK's remix is like an engine that takes awhile to get started up, stripping down and then rebuilding the beat in a full-on jam.
