:: Systematic
My introduction to Marc Romboy came via the dark Lost EP he released with Tyree Cooper back in early 2008, which took "minimal" seriously and made a track that put 99.99% of minimal techno to shame. Reading the title here, you'd think this was blasted with horn samples and the like but this is yet another line drive into left field that will keep people on their toes. Apparently inspired by an extended stay in New York, Romboy puts together a hand-clappin' rhythm, a completely indecipherable but hands-in-the-air two-syllable vocal sample and jazzy breakdowns in the style of a live band. This isn't just ripping off a tight groove from an old jazz record and calling it your own, but actually rockin' a House track like a jazz band would. Oddly, the first few bars after this thing gets into its groove reminded me of Moby's rave anthem "Go!" (which honestly made me throw up in my mouth a little) but it's a mirage. This is a powerful tune for being relatively low-tempo. The horn riffs do eventually make an appearance but in a manner so totally different than most jazzy House tracks that I'm inclined to use a word I almost never use here and call Mr. Romboy a genius.
