If you're a fan of Mushroom Jazz, this is going to be a terrific surprise. Mark Farina's career has been an unprecedented throwback, making his greatest mark by the ingenious blend of other people's music rather than his own. Think about another artist for whom this is true: you'd probably have to go back to Ron Hardy and other legends from two and three decades ago to find one. But the chill Hip-hop and downtempo vibe is just one side of Farina; here after a long interval is the funk-headed monster you may have missed. "That's How" is a sampledelic trip featuring a prominent clip of Jim Morrison from his bearded burn-out phase (I'm only slightly ashamed to say I used to have the interview this was taken from on VHS). "Talk, Sex" is another jackin' stomper with an absolutely devastating bassline. This is a complete package: 6 tracks without filler, and easily my pick so far for best release of 2010.
