+ Mike Dunn pres. The MD X-Spress: "The Congregation EP Volume 2"
:: Defected
I have no idea what vitamins Mike Dunn is taking these days, but he's just about clearing the board as far as consistently hot releases. Damn near every month there's something new, and not just a rehashing of the same songs or the same sounds. This 4 track EP (2 original tracks plus 2 remixes) just ripped me out of my seat in the way that only Mike Dunn can do. "Feel the Muzik" has a tripped out but irresistible riff on what sounds like a xylophone. I can't describe it, but it just works. The BlackBall Muzik remix, with maybe a little nudge on the pitch control, could probably get the juke kids footworking too. "Do You (House Dance)" starts out sounding like a throwback to the days of those dark tracky tunes that made the trek from Detroit and Chicago to Berlin and back before you realize something more is going on here. Nobody in this city, this country or damn near the whole world makes a beat that sounds like a Mike Dunn beat, and that's in full effect here.
