:: Defected
Like Volumes 1 and 2, the third Congregation EP by Chicago's Mike Dunn is centered around one truly earth-shattering track - in this case, "Get Cho House On (Children)". Few producers have honed their own distinctive sound the way Mike Dunn has, and "Get Cho House On" fits pretty squarely with "God Made Me Phunky", "Phreaky Muthafucka" and last year's smash "This Here is House Music" in the vault of classic MD tunes. Both mixes of the main cut are serious, straight-up jack - I give the BlackBall Main Mixx a slight edge over the Chocolate Puma Remix but they're both up there. The other tracks included here ("Deep Down" and "Let The Groove (Drive Yo Phunky Soul)" generate enough light and heat to stand on their own.
But what's great about these tracks are that they're seriously FUN. House Music can be horribly, frowningly serious sometimes, and Mike putting on a mock carnival barker voice in "Deep Down" is just FUN. A lot of the classic tracks people of my time grew up with in the 1990s weren't all love and peace and freedom and about making bold statements using authentic Brazilian bongo players. Like Green Velvet's "The Preacher Man" or "Flash" or Sneak/Bear Who's "Fix My Sink" or even - going way back - Chip E.'s "It's House", this music is about having a good time. Mike clearly had a good time making them and that enthusiasm is infectuous.
