Anyone that grew up in Chicago in the 1990s has fond memories of Miles Maeda, his crazy hair bobbing up and down behind a set of decks. In fact, you could have randomly walked into any club, loft party or rave and there was a damn good chance that Miles was playing, though exactly WHAT he was playing was anyone's guess. He was ubiquitous in the scene: a DJ's DJ, with a repertoire that ranged from club classics to downtempo and techno to House, and even some experimental ambient when the mood and the crowd demanded it.
Miles moved away (and we were all sad when he did), but has continued in his quest to find truth through hurling himself into the world. And that sort of approach to life is reflected in his sets but especially so in his productions.
"Addicted Me With Love" is quite unlike anything I've heard lately: something that could go over like a tidal wave with the nu-disco crowd but could be blended equally well with straight-up House, vintage electro, a set of nostalgic new wave or '80s pop or even (I ain't lyin') two genres as mutually opposed as downtempo and j-pop.
A different producer might look over what he's done and decide to conventionalize his stuff with heavy bass, an elephant foot, some throbbing 303 bloops or other soft-synth patterns. Not here: there's a kind of purity to this track in that it appeals to so many different genres without compromising. The only remix is Miles' own Dark Dirty Edit, which jazzes it up a bit. Props to Miles for making this and Amenti to releasing this without a bunch of fancy and unnecessary windowdressing. [ - Terry Matthew / December 2010 - ]
