The Rurals :: Nettle Soul
Review by Chain | Published September 2007 | Review Archives
The Rurals are a Deep House band hailing from Devonshire, and following the DIY attitude of punk and classic indie music, have released something akin to 50 EPs under the imprint of their own labels as well as doing remixes for Motown, Naked Music and Jeff Craven's Large. They've actually actually already released another LP since Nettle Soul came out in 2006, and here's a little secret: you'll rarely find a Deep House DJ in this town that doesn't have The Rurals in his crate. With live guitars and bass, the sound here is as warm and organic as anything on a Louie Vega record, and Marie Tweek is an understated but sweet vocalist. The album slinks from one track to the next, all at about the same tempo (and that's good or bad depending on how into the deep stuff you are); highlights are "Rubbersong" and "Just Fine". A couple of remixes at the end give this a shot of adrenaline that's much appreciated, particularly with the closing track, "Addict (BitterSuite Remix)".
