Despite this being Scrubfish's first solo EP, I have to say I've always been a big fan of his remixes and past production work as part of the "Scrubfish and Laurence" duo. I'm also very happy to say that this EP does not disappoint.
Starting with the A Side, "The Jazzface" is a head bobber best experienced on a bass-heavy set of speakers, topped off with well-placed and smoothly layered piano and keyboard samples. DJs will be very tempted to go for a three minute blend session on the back end; there's so much to work with here. "Holla if You Came To Funk" is just nasty (the good nasty), and reeks of the jazz-heavy Chicago style I've been craving lately. The track reminds me of Mardi Gras for some reason, I can't quite put my finger on it, but it will definitely have dance floors moving.
The B Side is not to be ignored either. The remix of Chop City DJs' "Time To Shake" borders on the techy side of things and should be used as such, though I fear on this EP it will be overshadowed by the other three tracks. "Testify to The Soul Provider" relies on the bassline for most of the energy, then unleashes a nasty horn breakdown just to make sure you're paying attention. A little bit of soul never hurt anybody now did it? Overall I proclaim this is vinyl worth owning, and I'm already looking forward to the next EP from Scrubfish.
