:: Smooth Agent Records
These four tracks were in my "possibly awesome" pile for a while before I Interweb-skooled myself on this label. When I finally gave the four different tracks a listen, I just plain dug 'em. Cesar Ramirez' "Exploration" is just that - a deep, spacey, and driving track that sets itself apart from the other three on this EP. Moving on, it's a toss-up between Melvin Meeks' "Time 2 Dance" and Vince Melo's "Junkin Jack Jazz" for the Funkiest Funk Award. You know how you and your best bud used to go crate digging together? Those urban adventures where - when you both heard that awesome, awesome track or two that made the whole trip worth it - the two of you made eye contact over the beat and connected with subtle grins that meant you found what you came for? Well, you'll probably get into it with that same friend over who has first dibs to play these tracks first (but only if you dig stuff that's toe-tapin' and ass-shakin')!
Meeks' "Time 2 Dance" is peppered with a funky bass and what could be a very funky man repeating "boom.boom." at the first half of each bar, plus a booming voice with quotes like "follow me ... on this house journey. ... it's time to dance." "Time 2 Dance" is best earlier in the night to get 'em goin'. Then drop "Junkin Jack Jazz" with its heavy funk and crazy-ass keys and, perhaps, even a hint of bongos?! There's just no way anyone will not bust a move all over the place with this one. And you'll leave 'em wanting more when the sultry female voice ends the track with an abruptly altered but perfectly delicious send-off. In between those two tracks, you could throw in Dave Britton's funky/glitchy "Illustrator" to keep people movin' but also give them a chance to breathe and get ready for more all-out sweating later on.
