Sonny Fodera: Flores

Beatdown

/

"In the cool of the evening when everything is gettin' kinda groovy...". The first line and its cool delivery will clue you in that this is not a new piece of material. Sonny Fodera has brought Dusty Springfield's version of "Spooky" up to speed for the 21st century and it is catchy. I find myself singing it around the house a lot. Sonny's signature is all over this, from the bassline down to the "woos" that punctuate the verses.

"Holds Us Together" could be a fantastic closer for any set to leave the audience wanting more. I call this a vocal without lyrics because it's full of female crooning, there are just no intelligible words to it. It's one of those chin up to the ceiling with your eyes closed, just feeling it type of tracks. The disco version is included and it has a slower build to it but it's a lot groovier.

"Got Love" is probably the closet to electro I'll play and it's got some serious attitude. It's all in the line "Who in the world wanna pop wit' that". This is the kind of trickery that manifests when you have a background in hip hop production like Fodera does.

"Flores" will stand in the shadow of the other 3 on this EP but that doesn't make it any less deserving of being the title track. I'd label it quirky tech house with some solid bounce. The percussion and combination of all the different rhythm patterns are what make this track so great. Beatdown is being led from the front by the boss man himself, just as it should be.
