Terrence Parker: Lost Treasures Volume 1

Systematic

/

Systematic has always been an odd bird, with hit-or-miss releases and comps that seem to muddy the presentation of what the label stands for rather than to clarify it. If there's any bad karma afflicting their souls, it's been cleansed for sure with one of the most brilliant releases of 2011. If Volume #1 is any guide, Lost Treasures promises to be a genre-shifting series.

"Love's Got Me High" - probably Terrence Parker's best - is given the remix treatment by Marc Romboy and Jimpster. I'm not going to say that remixing something like "Love's Got Me High" is easy - I mean, a classic is a classic and you're probably gonna piss off a few surly record nerds in hoodies no matter what you do. But the remixes here are actually good - faithful to the original while making it really move for the new sound of Deep House that's been breaking hard in 2011. Romboy's remix is the more laidback of the two - no surprise if you're familiar with their respective work - and could nestle at home easily in any Soulful House set. Jimpster's is more adventurous, with a sleek electronic but soulful sound courtesy of some Rhodes keys and chunky percussion. It's certainly a bit darker, glitchy, and strictly for the Deep House set. I don't think you can feel cheated by either one, though. The project has been given proper presentation with a digital release as well as limited quantities of 10" vinyl.
