Vick Lavender :: "The Chase" (Tribute to Fred Hampton)
>>Unified Records

Back in February, I put together the collage for our masthead with a photo clip of Fred Hampton from an old Black Panther tribute poster. I'm glad that someone else has been inspired by the Chicago Black Panther leader, who continues to inspire me. Vick Lavender's "The Chase" features what sound like live instruments - a little bit of a Latin swing of the sort that doesn't stray far from his work with Mr. A.L.I., but with an inspired piano solo that really moves and that fat blues jam organ (Hammond B3?) that just blows me away. This is for fans of that Louie Vega and Masters at Work sound who nevertheless want to experiment in a more eclectic direction.
