Wayne Gardiner, The Man from CIMA, is back with a tune that every Deep House and downtempo aficionado should have in their book. If you don't know who Wayne is, he's one of the East Coast goodfellas that was at the epicenter the explosion of Strictly Rhythm in the early 1990s, and probably one of my most unsung producers of the moment. Just a few of his aliases and production names he's been associated with: Logic, Eminence, Sound Source, ClassicMan... (I'll pause here for you to go rifle through the crates... Okay, back?)
One of the things that sets a Wayne Gardiner production apart is a sure touch: if what's on the front won't work for you on a Tuesday night in a lounge in Madison, Wisconsin, I bet what's on the flipside of the same release will kill them. Case in point: the original cut is so deep that it can be blended into just about everything a Deep House DJ is likely to have with him - Latin, African, downtempo, lounge, neo-soul, you name it. It's also a really beautiful piece of songwriting, with an absolutely inspired vocal by Jahzara. Yet in the same package is what he calls a "Hard Dub" mix, and the refined elegance of the original mix doesn't stop him from tearing it down into a wall-beating jam with sparse chords over a heavy groove. There's something exquisite about all six mixes here.
