Wil Milton :: "Rubberband"
Review by DJ Lil John | Published March 2008 | Review Archives
Okay, I'm on the fence about this project. "Rubberband" will fit nicely into one of two music bins: "nostalgic" or "dated"! Wil Milton has resurrected the Larry Heard/Fingers Inc. sound that helped to shape the House sound of Chicago almost twenty years ago... And I understand that "imitation is the best form of flattery", but it's 2008 - where's the originality?!
In Wil's "Bad Azz" mix, EVERY INSTRUMENT is borrowed from the Larry Heard sound library! EVERYTHING, except for an eerie electronic stab here and there... Flip to the "Gravity NYC" mix, and you'll hear an intro with the classic TR-909 drums and a "Washing Machine"-like bassline (Mr. Fingers) that will either have you reminiscing about the good ole days... or NOT.
No disrespect to Wil Milton, I'll give him an 'E' for effort. But what would have made "Rubberband" complete is if it was available on a red and white Trax Record 12" vinyl... That, or a Tone-Master cassette tape...
