+ Yass - "I Go Deep" (dunnEASY Remixes)
:: Grei Matter
One of the most intriguing submissions this month, "I Go Deep" on Kerri Chandler's Grei Matter label is a collaboration between Ethan White (of Tortured Soul fame) and Ed Dunn from 3 Degrees Global, with vocalist LT Brown behind the mic. This is a really subtle recording, and it took me a few spins to really set down what's so peculiar about it.

With so many talented cooks in the kitchen, you might expect some kind of novelty song made-to-order, the product of goofing around one afternoon in the studio. "I Go Deep" on the other hand is as serious as a heartattack. As the name might imply, this is serious Deep House without apologies. It's the mix of influences that sets it apart.

Let's start with the dunnEASY Aloha Mix. Again, the name might imply this is some kind of novelty act. Far from it. You do have some tribal percussion which might remind one of Polynesian rhythms. Over the top, L.T. Brown crosses James Brown with a gospel tinge. But what really makes this song - and this is what I mean by subtlety - is the bass. It's just two notes, throbbing like a heartbeat in reverse. With the tribal drums, the bass provides a stable anchor. The effect is sultry, sensual, and mesmerizing.

The Big Room Mix on the other hand is more straightforward, doing just what it implies, albeit with a more Latin than Polynesian sound. This sounds very East Coast, driving you up to the edge with a simple organ riff leading to a pretty prolonged building before pushing you over with a feather.

"I Go Deep" is a digital only release, well worth the price of a download.
